PhD Defense: Dealing with Spelling Variation in Non-Standard Texts
7 March 2022
Abstract: The thesis introduces ways to deal with spelling variation, i.e. the phenomenon that words are written differently throughout a text, which is typical for non-standard (e.g. historical) texts. Spelling variation complicates automatic processing like part-of-speech tagging or lemmatization, and even searching in texts. In contrast to other approaches, the presented approaches deal with spelling variation without resorting to a given standard.
